Picked up this '84 from my mother-in-law's first cousin. She bought it new or almost new (less than 2k miles. It was originally purchased on the "TASP (tourist automobile shipping program for North America". or the "buy and fly" program. I have the original order, and paperwork, I know the ship it came across on, the shipping company, and the importer company. The original purchaser (still trying to figure this all out when and where my Mother-in-law's cousin bought it), was on June 14, 1984, in Frankfurt, Germany. This car was stored inside its entire life, has 111k miles on it and absolutely no rust. No rust is pretty much unheard of in Iowa for old cars. We ended up with the car because she had a stroke a couple of years ago and cannot drive. I made her a generous offer and she wouldn't take it. As I was helping to clean out her house, getting ready to sell, I ended up getting the car for $1,500.00. So far, I've changed the belts, fluids, and tires along with a massive cleaning. I still have a timing belt to change and I'm guessing a fuel pump as she whines a little when cold. from the right rear. Overall, in pretty good shape. The interior has a small crack on the drivers door card but it isn't really noticeable. The glove box vinyl covering has let go in a couple of spots, so that is on my list to fix. The air does not work, but probably just needs to be recharged, and I have to clean and lube the blower motor. It makes one hell of a racket.
Rabbit Convert. 5-Speed $9,982.00 US
Air Conditioning $ 630.00
Radio (Heidelberg stereo) $ 0.00
Whitewall tires $ 63.00
Alloy Wheels $ 252.00
Catalyst retrofit $ 175.00
Bronze Metalic/Light Sand $ 126.00
Beigh Leatherette Interior $ 0.00
Make Ready charge $ 35.00
Initial registration $ 14.00
Total $11,263.00
There was also a $500 deposit that was refundable when exportation from Germany.
It was on the ship Ferngolf with a shipping date of July 4th and arrival of July 17th, 1984.
I also have an original Tonneau cover, although I have no idea how it fits the car. At some point she replaced the stereo with a kick-ass "Road Gear" piece of crap. Luckily, she kept the original and left it in the trunk. I'm going to have to see why she replaced it. My guess is the tape deck quit (she loved to listen to music).
