it was a bit of both, but mainly the bushes and bearings. I did adjust the cassette a little too though. Change the bushes though, you won't regret it! Good luck!

i did get new bushings but still cant get 1st gear. guess i need the bearing? where to get it and how much?

Their short shifter / weighted billet rocks.......................... I would say ask Camilus, but he hasn't put it on yet.

Did you change all of the bushes including the awkward ones on the shift rod? They were my worst ones, then just adjusting the cassette fixed the problem.

1. put car in neutral
2. remove shift knob and shift boot assembly
3. loosen clamp on shift rod closest to transmission (right in front of selector ball that the short shift bar bolts to)
4. wiggle stickshift side to side (not sure if this is neccesary, but i read it in one of the many threads i read today, so i gave it a shot. whoever original said it claimed it helps in breaking the clamp loose)
5. grab a cassette (to the yougins: a cassette is what everyone had for music before CDs and MP3 players)
6. remove cassette from it's case
7. look at cassete and note where the cassette is thicker (the part where the tape is exposed)
8. place the thick part between the plastic arm and lockout (have a friend hold it in place by putting pressure towards the drivers side of car so the cassette doesn't fall.
9. tighten clamp that you loosened in step 3
10. remove cassette
11. re-install shift boot and knob
12. test drive
13. feel satisfaction for a DIY well done!
is the clamp under the car or in the car? i will have to try it when i get a minute

You can ask me, though. I put it in my car last summer. It's awesome. Shifts like a Honda now, maybe better. The shifter has a well-defined pattern and it snicks cleanly and smoothly into each gear, every time. I no longer find myself wondering if I've found 1st or 3rd. When it comes to sheer enjoyment for the money I think this is one of the best things you can do to your car, because you touch the shifter many times every time you drive. A vague, frustrating shifter is one of the things that makes a car feel like an old heap.

I do have plans to put it on though. Now that the cabby is running consistantly, I feel I can put on the finishing touch.
