Halfway there, question about transmission.

Post by triplewhite »

Well, I spent the last couple of days taking out my transmission. Welding braces and running around for tools took up most of day one, and this morning I got the offending unit clear of my car. When I put it next to the replacement transmission I have (both are 9As) I noticed a couple of differences.

The item in the red circle I just unbolted from the original and bolted to the replacement. My question has two parts. 1. What is it? and 2., it appears to be adjustable, as to how far into the transmission it goes. What do I do?

The item in the green circle is clearly for a hose, but I don't have that on mine. Should I just plug this?

And finally... My original transmission code is 9A31084. From what I understand, this makes it an '84, even though the car is an '87. The replacement code is 9A**1106. What year does this make it? Surely not a 2006?

Ah, yes, just one more question. Any recommendations on where to get shifter bushes, and engine mounts?

Thanks all.

^The last 2 digits of the code do NOT indicate what year it is. The 9A transmission was NOT installed in 1984 Cabriolets. The 9A transmission was installed in 1985 to very early 1987 model year Cabriolets. However, this does not mean that your "original" transmission is original to the car, nor does it mean that the "replacement" transmission is from a Cabriolet; hence the differences.

The red-circled item is a detent plunger. It adjusts a spring inside the transmission. The "original" trans simply has a different adjuster on it.

The green-circled item is a transmission "breather" and should have a "breather cap" (part #014301485) on it.

Great thanks, so should I not use the detent plunger in the replacement transmission then?

It already has one; it's merely a different style (and is just like mine): you use, if it's necessary to make an adjustment, a wrench to turn the bolt (as seen in your "replacement" pic) rather than using your hand. ;)
