VW Noob Needs help...

LOL!!! Thats funny, because right after I posted, I thought about it and I was like.....Thats a dumb idea!!! LOL!
I live near L.A. and remember a time when I saw a Cadillac, mind you, that had Honda emblems all on it...... HONDA EMBLEMS!!!...... ON A CADILLAC!!!!

Not only that, he had a big visor sticker on it that said none other than... "Powered by Honda".....

There were also other rice rocket stickers and junk, next the the brahma bull and cowboy hat stickers.... LOL!

Once that tought passed, I was like "heck no am I going to change the emblems!"

But thanks for the imput.

I forgot to add my bit about my opinion on stock Cabbies. Yours appears to be in exceptional condition for it's age, and finding mint or near-mint older Cabbies is getting increasingly rare.

There certainly is no shame at all in being stock. Quite the contrary, IMHO. It's really easy to take a car that may have some flaws, and modify it to your tastes-parts are still plenty and there is always someone selling bits and pieces to make your car truly yours with your own personal touches. Adding trim pieces, removing trim, re-doing the interior, etc etc. It is all addicting and can get expensive, but it is fun.

The really hard part is impeccably taking care of what you have, sourcing out all OEM replacements, hitting the junkyard and E-Bay....resisting the urge to throw on that really cool and hard to find item that catches everyone's eye.

I was also fortunate enough to find a great looking all-original Cabby, purchased from the original owner. Though my car is no longer all OEM, I have been fairly careful when adding slight mods. Everything that I have put on the car is not bolted or drilled...the only exception is the Kamei grill spoiler-but those are just tiny holes

If I were to take off every part I added, you'd never notice that the car was anything but stock. Even the hood lifts were customized to not require tapping or drilling (see Steve Langfords parts 4 sale ad).

Hey kuklaki, Thanks for the imput. I never thought of mods that way.
But the type of person I am, if I were to make changes or add mods, they would be very subtle mods, like yours, small holes.

differences between then and now... lil bit of paint of the hood, suspension is installed, and some stereo work

The only visible mods we have done is added the Kamei grill spoiler, momo shift knob, Steve Langford hood lifts-no drilling required

, will soon be adding a new set of wheels-not stock but they are period correct...have not been made since 1990 and I scored the Compomotives new in box, and of course she was lowered just a hair...or is that hare?

I just want to note that a MK I Rabbit is actually a Golf. Rabbit is only the name given to the cars sold in North America.

I actually have proof, because the delivery documents for my car (I still have them) that were prepared at the Karmann factory clearly indicate that my car is a Golf Convertable built to Canadian specifications.

If I remember correctly, the verson sold in Germany at the time had a Golf badge where the Cabriolet badge appears on mine.

This would be akin to MK IV Jetta owners placing Bora badges on their cars.

I wouldn't concider that to be too much from reality.

Funny that you mentioned that, I was pondering a lil on the previous emblem posts and looking through some VW Cabrio pics on some site that I found on a Cabriolet webring, I stubled across this pic:

If anyone finds where to get this kind of badge, please post it!

So what do you think? Should I modify or stay original? I am confused, I have seen other cabs online looking clean with a new bumper. Thats probably the extent of body mods that I will most likely do.

Jim, if you want to change it up to make it stick out, then go for it.. but then you can do that by adding something here or removing something there...or lowering say an inch and a half or so, throw that sick grill with the off center emblem on there... nothing major... but would still look cool.. after all, would stick out like a sore thumb with just that little bit.

Contact George (Black_cabbie); he had a couple sets for sale over on Vortex recently. Since he's not around here these days, head over to the Tex and give him an IM. Or one of us Texers can tell him to get his butt over here

FWIW, black Cabs are actually becoming increasingly rarer and hard to find in excellent shape; most other basic colors are still a dime a dozen. I wouldn't do too much to your Cab except maybe some euro bumpers (RPI Equipped has 'em right now) and sport suspension to drop it a bit for exterior mods. But it's your car, do what will make you happy!

And I gotta say, since "CalAlta" mentioned it: American Mk4 Jetta owners putting Bora badges on their cars are trying to be "euro" when in fact "Jetta" is the original name for the car. Mk1 and Mk2 Jettas existed on both sides of the Atlantic. Sedans don't sell well over in Europe so VW changed the name in Europe to Vento for the Mk3 in hopes of increasing sales (didn't work) and changed it again for the Mk4 (Bora).

Taking the "Cabriolet" badge off and replacing it with "Golf" would be an okay thing to do since "Golf" is the original name for the car. If you want to be period-correct, leave the lower "Cabriolet" badge off as it didn't come around until the Clipper Cabs.

You have a nice Cabby there, Jim

My personal view is to get another Cabby of the same year (+ or -) and
modify the living oil out of it

One reason to do this is to keep one completley bone-stock for future generations to admire and the other one to express all of your inner car designer

And I thought the decline of western civilization was that Wendy's commercial where the office people make noises to describe their half-assed salads

LOL, it's ok if the emblems make sense for your car, though.
